💨 ClimateHack Vol 106: Fermented CO2 brings in $43M

PLUS: SF-based Marathon Fusion comes out of stealth with $5.9M Seed funding

Hi There,

Do you feel guilty when you fly?

With summer in full swing and travels aplenty, flights during this time of the year can come with good reason.

Wether you’re travelling to the wedding of your best friend in Italy, taking that dream trip to Mongolia, or making a long overdue visit to your family back home - there are distances that trains can’t effectively cover.

But if you’re sitting in the plane cursing your choices and promising to repent (or offset) the moment you land - is the trip worth taking?

This is a genuine question I had this morning sparked by this post from World Fund partner Daria Saharova. Her takeaway on flights boils down to “it’s okay to fly (so long as it’s not excessive - or easily done by train)” which feels like a reasonable middle ground that we can all largely agree to.

Though it’s easier (necessary even) to have that perspective when your business is built on funding companies that might be able to eliminate the adverse effects from industries like transport in the future.

Personally, I do sometimes get that creeping sense of guilt while 30k+ feet in the air sipping my G&T and watching the in-flight media. But I’m also a technology optimist and believe that things like SAF will make an impact.

I’m curious where you sit. There really are no wrong answers here:

🧲 A nuclear fusion experiment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, using magnets from Commonwealth Fusion System, has set a record for the strongest steady magnetic field confining a plasma.

Trends x Climate: Tracking Methane Emissions

🔎The Why: “Methane is both a powerful greenhouse gas (accounting for 30 % of the temperature increase from preindustrial levels) and short-lived compared to CO2. Reducing its emissions would be one of the cheapest and fastest way to lower GHG emissions. Leaks are one of the main sources, both from aging natural gas infrastructure and oil and gas fields. But tracing leaks of the odorless, colorless gas has been challenging,” Lena Thiede

📊 The Stats;
- Methane accounts for nearly ⅕ of global GHG emissions, and is responsible for around 30% of warming since the pre-industrial era.
- Methane has stronger heat trapping abilities then CO2 due to its structure, making it 80x more harmful than CO2 for 20 years after it is released.
- A report from the United Nations says that a 40%–45% reduction in methane emissions by 2030 is one of the least costly pathways to keep warming below 1.5 ℃.
- But energy-related methane emissions are increasing almost 5% each year, largely due to higher fossil fuel demand. And to make things worse, methane emissions from the energy sector are underreported by about 70%.

👀The Who; There are 14 companies globally working on Tracking Methane Emissions, including:
- UK-based Mirico who have raised $13M to date (from investors including Shell Ventures) to provide real-time situational awareness of the emissions from energy infrastructure.
- US-Based InsightM who have raise $100M to date helps oil and gas operators take a pragmatic approach to reducing their emissions, with profit-driving solutions for every stage of methane management.
